On August 24, Gawli was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar in 2007.

Inspector general (prisons) Vinod Lokhande said, “We have to keep in mind that there are other pending cases against him, so he will need to be brought to the city for trials.” Prisons that Gawli could be shifted to include Yerawada jail (Pune), Nagpur Central Jail or Kolhapur Central Jail, he added.

A police officer requesting anonymity said his location should not be considered as video-conferencing facilities could be used.
