He and his colleague, Kenji Hayusi, had come to Mumbai on Tuesday and had checked into Hotel Intercontinental The Lalit near the international airport. While Matsubara was staying in room number 358, Hayusi, who is an export sales leader, was in room no 359, police said.

According to the Sahar Airport police, Matsubara, an export sales chief of the Japan-based firm Nikuni Japan, was in the city for five days to attend an exhibition at the NSE Ground in Goregaon (East).

The duo was supposed to leave for the exhibition around 9.30am. When Hayusi tried to call Matsubara on his mobile phone, his calls went unanswered.

“Hayusi informed the hotel authorities when Mastubara didn't open the door,” said Dilip Patil, senior inspector, Sahar Airport police station. “The hotel authorities opened the door with the help of a spare key and found Matsubara's body on the bed. They informed the police about the incident.”

Patil said there were no injury marks on the body.

“We have sent the body to Cooper Hospital for post-mortem. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained. We have registered a case of accidental death and do not suspect any foul play,” he said.
