The accused allegedly conspired with his friend and stole gold worth Rs23 lakh from another jewellery unit owner in the area.
The police said the complainant, Prakash Punn, 56, owner of a jewellery unit at Zaveri Bazaar, had registered a complaint with the LT Marg police against his employee, Jeetendra Rawal alias Jeetu after finding the gold bar missing.
“We initially assumed that Jeetu was the only culprit. However, we became suspicious of Dinesh Rawal, 27, who was Punn’s friend and had been accompanying him to the police station and began investigating him,” said Dilip Phulpagaare, assistant police inspector of LT Marg police station.
The police said the investigations revealed that Rawal, who also owns a jewellery unit, had recommended Jeetu to Punn. “Dinesh told Jeetu to steal the gold bar and bring it to him,” said Phulpagaare.
The police said Dinesh had hatched the plot to rob Punn. “We arrested Dinesh on June 4. During interrogation, Dinesh confessed to cheating Punn. He also told us that he split the bar and sold it. We have recovered gold worth Rs20 lakh,” said Phulpagaare. The police also said Dinesh owed money to several people and had cheated Punn to pay off his debt.
