The wait for senior officers continued on Monday, the day when they finally expected the shuffle.

The schedule of transfers and promotions this year was expected as early as March, though most transfers take place in May or June, said police sources.

The worstaffected by this uncertainty of the state government is the Mumbai police commissionerate wewhere a number of senior officials are due for promotion.

In Mumbai police, apart from the city’s police commissioner, three joint commissioners and three additional commissioners of police are likely to be promoted or transferred.

Sources said the state government had decided it would transfer only those who are due for promotion or those who have completed their tenure of three years in a particular post.

The word in IPS circles is that transfers may take place anytime now since two posts of director generals of police are vacant.

Another possibility is that the transfers would take place after Navratri in mid-October.

However, this is also viewed by scepticism by many as the state government has kept everyone guessing this year.

The government’s dillydallying is affecting the pace of work.

Though work continues at these offices, there are allegations that things are moving slowly as the officers do not want to do anything new fearing any allegations or controversy that could tarnish their image.

The officers affected most this year are those from the 1987 IPS batch, most of whom are likely to be promoted as additional director generals of police depending upon the available posts, the entire 1995 batch would be promoted as inspector generals of police; the 1999 batch will be promoted as deputy inspector generals of police.
