Man arrested for raping 9-year-old neighbour

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Govandi.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Govandi. According to police, Latif who ran a small grocery shop from his house in Govandi, raped a seven-year-old girl in his neighbourhood.

The girl had gone to Latif’s shop along with her maternal grandmother to buy some sweets. Her grandmother left some money with her and returned home. The girl stayed back to choose sweets.

After some time, the neighbours found the girl weeping on the road and took her to her house. On inquiry, the girl told her grandmother what Latif did with her after she (grand mother) had left.

Her grandmother then took her to the Shivaji Nagar police station to lodge a complaint against Latif.

Additional commissioner of police (east region) Ritesh Kumar said that the police has lodged the offence under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the investigation was on.

“The investigation is going on. The FIR is lodged and the girl’s statement is being recorded. We will take the necessary action,” said Kumar.

At the time of printing the paper, the police was recording the girl’s statement. Police officials said that Latif had not been arrested.
