“During monsoon, MMRDA should ensure there is no water logging in areas where their work is going on,” Mayor Shraddha Jadhav said on Tuesday.

This year, at least 530 km out of 1,900 km of roads have been dug up for projects undertaken by the MMRDA and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.

Last year, it was 425 km.

The BMC had blamed the MMRDA for water logging during the 2005 deluge.

To avoid another blame game this monsoon, Jadhav met assistant municipal commissioners and MMRDA officials on Tuesday to review pre-monsoon preparedness.

Civic officials said that the MMRDA, which is the planning agency for all infrastructure projects, will submit a localised disaster management plan to the BMC by Wednesday.

Jadhav has also asked the agency to submit its contingency plan to flush out floodwater in affected areas near their construction sites.

“We will barricade the construction site and ensure rainwater recedes immediately,” an MMRDA official said requesting anonymity.

“They [MMRDA] will also coordinate with ward officers,” Jadhav said. She said potholes and trenches on roads should be filled before the rains and no digging should take place after May 31.

The municipal corporation has set aside Rs 1 crore to fill potholes.

About 16 private and government agencies dig roads every year with the civic body’s permission.

The mayor has planned a second meeting with all these agencies for better coordination.
