“Investigations into the scam should be so strict that the culprits shouldn’t be left off the hook on the basis of their political weight,” said Patkar.

Patkar-led National Alliance of People’s Movement had objected to clearances given to Adarsh society in 2008 and had written to the state and central governments demanding immediate action.

Patkar said the state had lost all moral authority to demolish slums. “The state should stop demolishing houses of the poor and instead peep into their own backyards.”
