Diva resident Nilesh Sonar had been missing since Sunday and a missing complaint had been registered with the Mumbra police.

The police have arrested two people — said to be a couple —in connection with the murder.

The Sonar family owns a jewellery store in Diva.

“He left his home around 2pm on Sunday saying that he was going for shopping. When he didn’t return home till late evening, his father filed a missing complaint with us. His body was found stashed in a travelling bag on Monday morning,” said senior police inspector Vikram Karkud, of Mumbra police station.

A case of murder has been registered and the body has been sent for post-mortem at JJ Hospital. Though the actual cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report comes out, police suspect that he was strangulated because no external injuries were found on his body.

“We are interrogating the accused. Sonar had recently befriended the couple, who had rented a place near Sonar’s home. Further investigations are on,” Karkud said.
