Nearly two months after the audacious attack on underworld gangster Abu Salem inside the Taloja central prison, the prison’s superintendent and his deputy have been shunted to ‘side postings’ following an enquiry report that was submitted to the state.
“Ramesh Kamble, the superintendent of Taloja prison, has been reassigned as principal of a training college at Yerawada prison, which is considered a side posting. Another senior jailor, who was Kamble’s second in command, has also been transferred to an obscure posting,” said a home department official, who did not wish to be identified.
“Both these transfers came into effect in the last week of August as the enquiry report on the incident cited shortcomings on the officials’ part.”
Additional director general of police (prisons) Meeran Borwankar was asked to enquire into the attack and submit a report explaining how it took place and who all were at fault, along with suggestions on security measures to ensure such an incident did not take place again.
Earlier, immediately after the incident, three constables and a jailor were suspended pending enquiry. While two of the suspended constables were responsible for checking inmates at the entrance, the third constable was responsible for frisking inmates entering the high-security cell and the jailor was in charge of security of this cell.
The official said they were still under suspension: “We are yet to decide the next course of action.”
Another official said that there have been four suspensions and two transfers following the incident.
“After a new superintend ent was brought in at Taloja, we carried out checks to test if the security apparatus was working and are satisfied with the results.”
