Mumbai cops conned of Rs 10 Lakhs by seven-member gang

Two constables were allegedly conned of Rs10 lakh by a gang of seven who posed as businessmen and crime branch officials.

According to the complaint registered with the Khar police station, the two police constables – Hemant Aawhad and Rakesh Kadam, attached to the local arms department, were approached by Devendra Seth, who said he could arrange for gold biscuits at a low price.

On August 22, another accused he would deliver the gold at Khar railway station the following day.

The constables first met Seth, who took them to a hotel nearby and introduced them to the people who were supposed to bring the gold.

The two unidentified men then took the constables to another café, where they showed them the gold biscuits.

The constables verified the purity of the biscuits and where one of the unidentified accused took Rs10 lakh and promised to return with the gold.

When he did not return, the complainants began questioning Seth and his accomplice.

When the constables, Seth and his accomplice left the hotel to look for the missing men, other members of the gang arrived and started beating up Seth’s accomplice.

When the consta-fied themselves as crime branch officials and said the man they were beating up was a wanted accused and took him away.

The accused said they would reach the money to the two at Dadar railway station.

When they reached Dadar station, the accused called Seth’s phone and said they would return the money the following day.

On August 24, the constables found the phones of all accused, including those who posed as the crime branch officials, switched off.

They then lodged a complaint with the Khar police.

The police have nabbed three of the accused, including Seth, and are searching for the others on the basis of call data records.

Meanwhile, a magistrate court in Bandra granted bail to Seth and another accused bail.
