Here is a welcome surprise. The authorities have finished work on the north-bound stretch of the Kherwadi flyover nearly a month in advance, and plan to throw it open to the public in the next few days.

The Kherwadi flyover will make travel on the Western Express Highway ( WE H ) faster, as there will be less congestion. Motorists will be able to skip all traffic signals between the sea link and the Dahisar check naka by using 13 flyovers on the WEH.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had set an Aprilend deadline for completion of work.

Although it completed construction earlier than planned, the MMRDA will not be able to inaugurate the flyover till April 11 because of the code of conduct for the Bandra East Assembly by-poll.

“Finishing touches are being given to the flyover. We expect it to be completely ready in the next few days,” said B Venugopal Reddy, MMRDA additional commissioner.

Taking serious note of the traffic congestion at the Kherwadi junction, the MMRDA had decided to construct the flyover in two phases. The south-bound stretch was opened in June last year.

The 580m Kherwadi flyover starts at the Government Polytechnic Colle ge and ends about 20-50m before the Kalanagar flyover.

At present, major traffic snarls are reported on t he stretch between Kherwadi junction and the sea link during peak hours.

To reduce congestion, the traffic police have been using one of the lanes on the southbound stretch for the traffic heading north during evening peak hours.

The MMRDA has planned four flyovers between Kalanagar junction and BKC for smooth dispersal of traffic.
