Mumbai teen kept quiet about rape by friends for 2 days

The 16-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by four of her friends at Dindoshi, Goregaon, on Friday was too shocked to approach the police and kept silent for two days before she broke down on Sunday, the police said.

The teen lives in a chawl at Santosh Nagar in Goregaon (east) with her grandmother, her older brother and his wife.

Her mother abandoned the family two years ago after her father passed away. Her brother works as a labourer.

After she was gangraped, the survivor escaped and went home, but she did not say anything to her family, the police said.

“On Sunday, when her grandmother asked her why she was so quiet, she broke down. Her brother then brought her to the police station,” said an official from Dindoshi police station.

When the accused realised that the girl was going to the police, they fled their homes in Santosh Nagar.

“All six have several property offences registered against them,” an official said.

The police have photos of the accused and are trying to track them down through their mobile phone locations.

On Sunday, the girl was sent to Bhagwati hospital for medical examination; the report will be ready on Monday.

“Though she was sent for a test more than 24 hours after the assault, it will not affect medical evidence apart from vaginal swabs. There is other evidence for rape, including nail marks, abrasions caused by struggle, etc.,” an official said.

The police have sent the clothes she was wearing when raped for forensic analysis.
