Additional commissioner of police (East region) Qaiser Khalid told HT that though the constables had been charged with murder, they are still to be arrested pending the post mortem reports.

“There are apprehensions that the boy could have died following an epileptic attack. Only the post mortem report will reveal the cause of death,” Khalid said.

Around 70 local residents gheraoed the Rajawadi hospital and later the Tilak Nagar police station on Monday after the boy died on Monday.

They said the boy Kalyan Salve, 17, along with cousin Krishna Salve, 16, and Sham Kumar Yadav, 24, were playing at Ambekdar Nagar area of Ghatkopar on Sunday night.

They said two constables who passed the area on a bike presumed that the trio were fighting and followed them.

“The three boys got scared and started running when one of the constables hit them with a wooden baton,” said the local. The baton hit Kalyan who fell unconscious and died on Monday morning.
