“My juniors in office get paid more only because they are more qualified,” said Nakti, who joined the night school last year, after his employers encouraged him to finish his studies.

Sridevi Bapugund, 23, a resident of Prabhadevi, had to discontinue her studies after class 9 because of financial constraints.

Last year, with the support of her mother, she started attending Utkarsh Night High School after finishing her work as a maid during the day. Bapugund scored 57.4% in her SSC exams and wants to teach Hindi in a school someday.

Ivan Deshmukh, who teaches at St. Xavier’s Night High School, says, “Most students attending night schools need to be assured that they too can aim for a career in law or medicine like other students.”
