Firemen SW Rane, 41, and MM Desai, 40, lost their lives while trying to douse the fire that lasted more than seven hours, causing the dilapidated structure to collapse.

“We have registered two ADRs for the two deaths. The preliminary inquiry indicated short circuit may have caused the fire, that later spread. As of now, no complaints of negligence or sabotage have been received from the fire department,” said Sanjirao Mandlik, senior inspector posted at the LT Marg police station.

While the fire-fighting operation was underway, fire brigade chief Sunil Nesrikar and another senior fire brigade officer Sudhir Gopal Amin also sustained serious burns and were hospitalised.

According to the information available with the police, Nesrikar sustained 60% burns.
Amin, who sustained 90% burn injuries, is said to be in a critical condition.

Another fireman, Sanjay Raghunath Khot, and six other locals were treated at hospitals after sustaining burns in the fire.
