To add extra revenue, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) is using a trick that is used in some other countries.
The buses in Mumbai will go the New York way with advertisements pasted on the roofs of the buses. BEST has cleared a proposal to allow advertisements on the sides of roofs of the red-coloured single decker buses.
The overall proposal of advertisements on the bus includes having it inside the bus, on the rear and sides apart from having it on the roofs.
However, BEST committee members allege that the administration has not taken approval from the committee before going ahead with the proposal.
“The initial proposal only mentioned having advertisements on the rear, sides and inside the bus. The administration has taken the liberty to go ahead with having advertisements on the roof without the committee’s approval,” said BEST Committee member, Ravi Raja.
The members feel BEST is bound to face losses because the advertising on the roof is not part of the contract given to the advertiser.
Presently, buses with the advertising company’s name and contact number on the sides of the roof just above the windows are plying on the road.
The administration feels they have done no wrong in terms of getting permissions.
“We will show all the details of the contract with the advertising company to the BEST Committee,” said OP Gupta, BEST general manager.
