Anil, 32, and Jyoti Choudhary, 29, who live in Sagar Park at Gaondevi, had brought the girl two years ago from Bihar after promising her parents that they would educate her.

Instead they would make her to household chores and even hit her on several occasions, the police said. Last week, when the girl had overcooked food, Jyoti reportedly pressed down her hand on the hot stove, and she sustained burn injuries.

The girl could not bear the mistreatment anymore, and ran away. The couple even registered a missing person’s complaint with the Ghatkopar police.

Meanwhile, an autorickshaw driver, who found the girl loitering on the streets, thought that she was lost and took her to the Parksite police station.

“On questioning, the girl told us how her employers used to harass and assault her. Acting on her complaint we arrested the couple,” said Manisha Jadhav, police sub-inspector of the Ghatkopar police station.
