Two security guards of a Panvel-based housing society were arrested by the police on Friday for the rape of a 5-year-old girl. The minor had come to the city from Solapur only two weeks ago.
The accused, identified as Shivmathi Pandey, 25, and Shrikant Pandey, 55, both from Uttar Pradesh, worked as guards at Sadashiv cooperative housing society at Tilak Road. Police said the duo has confessed to the crime.
According to the police, the girl and her mother had come to her aunt’s house located close to the building where the Pandey’s worked. The girl’s mother was on the lookout for a job as a house help.
“The mother had met the accused a few days ago, while looking for a job in their building. The two guards had promised to help get her work with a family that resided in the building,” said Gajanan Ghadge, assistant police inspector, Panvel police station.
“The guards told her that the family was away and would come back in a few days. The woman would visit the building often in the hope of finding the job. The incident happened on December 22, on one such visit,” said Ghadge.
The police said Shrikant distracted the woman in conversation, while Shivmathi took the girl, who was playing in the society, to the security cabin and raped her. “Later, the two guards switched places and committed the gruesome act,” the officer said.
The girl did not mention the incident to her mother till the night of December 25. She confided in her mother after complaining of feeling ill.
Soon after, a complaint was registered with the police, which led to the duo’s arrest the two accused. “The two guards have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012,” he said.
They were produced in a Panvel court on Saturday and have been remanded to 12 days in police custody.
