Officials at the site added that when a pit was dug up to find the cause of the cave-in, they found fresh water in it. They concluded that the water pipeline must have been leaking for a few days before it burst on Sunday. The leakage must have dissolved the soil beneath the pipeline, making it loose.

Anand Waghralkar, assistant municipal commissioner, E-ward, said, “The repair work has started and is expected to be complete by Monday morning.”

The traffic movement along the road has been stopped and necessary diversions have been made. “Once the water pipeline is restored, we will repair the road,” said Waghralkar.
