Four men posed as cops and told a 70-year-old woman standing at a bus stop in Mahim on Wednesday evening that there was a nakabandi in the area to arrest robbers.
They asked Livlin Joseph D’souza to hand over her jewellery and cash for safekeeping.
The police said when D’Souza refused, one of the accused whipped out a chopper. “They snatched her ornaments and valuables worth more than over Rs 1.3 lakh and fled,” said senior police inspector B. Pawar of Mahim police station.
When D’souza raised an alarm, Assistant Sub-Inspector Vittal Thupe and constable Himmatrao Gangurde of the BKC police station, who were patrolling the area, chased the accused.
After a 10-minute chase, they caught one of the robbers, Javed Jaffery (25). But they could not recover the valuables as the three others escaped with them.
This is the second robbery case in four days in the Mahim-Bandra region.
The investigators have recovered a fake police identification card from the accused. The police said the accused are residents of Thane with criminal records and would commit crime in Mumbai.
