Policeman assaults photojournalist

A photojournalist lodged a complaint with the Azad Maidan police on Friday after he was attacked by a State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) sub-inspector.

A photojournalist lodged a complaint with the Azad Maidan police on Friday after he was attacked by a State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) sub-inspector.

The complainant Arun Patil, 42, a photographer working for a Marathi daily, alleged that he was attacked by an SRPF sub-inspector named Jadhav while he was covering a protest held at Azad Maidan.

“He said that Jadhav beat him when he tried to take pictures of the protestors,” said an official from Azad Maidan police station. Patil, who works for Dainik Prahar, was allegedly intercepted by Jadhav when he taking photos of the protest. Jadhav and Patil had an argument in which Jadhav told him that photographers were not permitted to take pictures. He then allegedly beat Patil up with his stick. Patil was sent to GT Hospital for medical tests and has suffered minor injuries. “We are investigating the matter,” said Bhaurao Bhawale, senior PI, Azad Maidan police station.
