Linking the complaint against Poonam Bhagat to their divorce case, her husband Jaidev Shroff’s lawyer on Tuesday alleged that Poonam did not want to kill him but wanted to perform black magic for relief in their divorce case.
Abad Ponda, Jaidev’s advocate, contended that Poonam had been in touch with a godman and fear she will add to his troubles. Ponda, while seeking her arrest, said if she may try to perform black magic on him. “She might spike my client’s food through a servant or anyone else. Her main intention is to perform black magic and control my client’s mind so that he follows her instructions and do as she says in their divorce case,” Ponda said.
Jaidev, who heads the Rs 2,000-crore United Phosphorous Ltd, had filed a complaint against Poonam, alleging that his wife gave him juice spiked with poison on Mach 25.
The FIR filed with Khar police station states, on March 25, Bhagat gave him juice spiked with poison, which made him dizzy. He then slept for long hours for the next few days. Shroff then left Mumbai and started taking treatment for poisoning in a private hospital in another state, according to the FIR.
While the Khar police arrested the godman, who according to Jaidev had advised Poonam to spike his drink, Poonam moved an anticipatory bail application before the sessions court. In her pre-arrest bail plea, she said, in January 2005, within six months of their marriage, Shroff allegedly hit her, gave her a black eye and broke her tooth by stuffing a mobile phone in her mouth.
In the application, Bhagat said she was assaulted again in December 2006 and Shroff had siphoned off money after he was appointed the director of Nirlon. Her application stated incidents of domestic violence between 2009 to 2015.
On Tuesday, arguing for Poonam, her advocates Amit Desai and Pranav Badheka said she is not the one who would abscond and there is no need for arrest. They also alleged that the FIR that has been filed is false. Badeka argued that all the contentions raised by the prosecution and Jaidev are false. “Jaidev is a powerful man and can go to any extend. My client fears his influence,” Badeka argued on behalf of Poonam.
Public prosecutor Iqbal Solkar said that the godman has confessed his role and said that he has given a potion to Poonam to give it to Jaidev with the intention of performing black magic. The prosecution also said that investigation is on and they need to take Poonam’s voice samples to match the same with the conversation allegedly between her and the godman in a CD they have received.
Meanwhile, the godman, arrested in the case, has also moved a bail application alleging that he has been falsely implicated in the case. He has alleged that he is just a businessman and takes care of the shrine which his father and forefathers had managed.
