The decision was taken at a meeting convened by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar to discuss the issue of shortage of public toilets for women.
The state government has decided to approach the Bombay high court for special permission to build public toilets under flyover bridges in the city, where any construction is currently banned. After the BMC expressed helplessness in constructing more toilets on arterial roads due to unavailability of space, the decision of approaching the HC to build toilets below flyover bridges was taken by Pawar on Tuesday.
It was also decided to make toilets compulsory at petrol pumps, toll nakas, government and semi-government offices and on highways.
“The rules will be amended to make existing toll-posts and petrol pumps construct toilets. Pumps and toll plazas coming up in future will have to have provisions for toilets before seeking a no-objection certificate,” Pawar said.
