“The apprehensions came true when we seized a large quantity of fake dollars last year. Our investigation also revealed that these fakes had originated from Pakistan,” joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy said on Tuesday.
He said the crime branch had made out 46 cases of fake currency circulation in 2011 involving the seizure of Rs74 lakh worth of fakes, against Rs43 lakh through 61 cases in 2010.
The bulk of these fakes found their way into the country through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border, he said.
Drugs seizures up
Roy said the police registered 958 narcotics cases in 2011, compared to 657 the year before. Last year, 1,661 persons were held under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, compared to 1,336 in 2010.
