Of the total 24 independents in the 288-member assembly, 12 independents support Congress and 11 back NCP. Anil Bonde, from Morshi constituency in Vidarbha, said the independent MLAs who support Congress met on Wednesday to discuss development projects in their constituencies and other issues.

He denied that the meeting had anything to do with the Rajya Sabha by-election to be held on July 22, where Congress candidate Hussain Dalwai will take on Surendra Mane of the Shiv Sena-BJP. “We are Congress supporters, and will vote for the party’s nominee. We met CM Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday and another meeting is expected on Thursday to discuss development issues in our constituencies,” Bonde said.
