Students from Maharashtra will be eligible for admission to state-controlled engineering colleges even if their class 12 aggregate score is less than 50%, the government clarified on Thursday.

“The board aggregate cap has been removed to prevent vocational or technical stream students, who always score more than general faculty students, from getting undue advantage,” said a senior official requesting anonymity. On Wednesday, the higher and technical department had said that students with class 12 aggregate score below 50% will not be eligible for admission to engineering colleges.

Other conditions, as laid down by state cabinet on Wednesday, remain unchanged. Accordingly, marks obtained in physics, chemistry and mathematics will count only towards the final merit list, which will be drawn by giving equal weightage to class 12 marks and score from the single national joint entrance exam (JEE).

The Union HRD ministry has fixed the weightage for admission to centrally-funded institutions and given states the freedom to decide weightage pattern.
