On Thursday, at 2am, Hemant Giri (60) and his brother Hasmukh (45) were returning to their Mulund Colony residence after Ganpati immersion when a speeding private bus crashed into their tempo near Chheda Petrol Pump junction on LBS Road.
The police arrested the bus driver, Nallu Muthu Palani Swami (28), a resident of Pokhran Road in Thane. Swami was speeding, but he was not drunk at the time of the incident, the police said. While Hemant, who was driving the tempo, died on the spot, Hasmukh is critical.
In the second incident on Wednesday, Yunus Noor Mohammed Sheikh (11), who was riding pillion, fell off a motorcycle on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road and a vehicle ran over him, killing him.
The police arrested the boy’s uncle, Rafique Khan, for negligent driving resulting in Sheikh’s death and are looking for the owner of the vehicle that ran over the boy. Khan claimed that he lost control of his motorcycle when a car hit him from behind and his bike rammed a BEST bus. Sheikh and Khan fell on the road and a vehicle ran over the boy, injuring him fatally on his head and chest.
Sheikh, who lived in Bhandup, was rushed to a hospital in Airoli, but was declared dead on admission.
