Greed for property drove a woman to plan the murder of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law in Gamdevi. Her plan, however, misfired as her 78-year-old mother-in-law survived the attack.
Rupal Gandhi, 44, wanted Chandaben’s two-bedroom hall kitchen flat at Peddar Road transferred in her husband’s name. Hence she allegedly plotted the murder of his family members.
According to the police, Rupal paid her domestic help, Ramchandra Gomane, Rs 5,000 and promised to forgo the loan amount of Rs 23,000 that he had taken for his marriage.
On Sunday, Rupal instructed Gomane to go to her mother-in-law’s house in the evening.
As instructed, Gomane rang the bell of Chandaben’s house at 4pm. “Ila opened the door and saw Gomane. Since he had worked with Deepak for seven years she led him into the hall,” said Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of police (zone II).
However, Gomane pushed Ila on the sofa and strangled her with his hands. Hearing Ila’s cries for help, Chandaben rushed into the hall and saw Gomane
“Gomane then pushed Chandaben. She hit her head against the wall and fell on the floor unconscious. Thinking that she was dead, he left the house leaving the main door ajar,” said Kumbhare.
When asked why did the servant did not flee or go into hiding, the Gamdevi police said that Rupal did not think that Chandaben would survive the attack.
Deepak, however, was unaware of his wife’s evil plans, the police said.
The police have arrested Gomane and presented him before the court on Tuesday where he was remanded to police custody for 10 days.
