Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said, “The progress on keeping all three dumping grounds stench- free has not been satisfactory. Therefore, we have served them with show-cause notices to which they will have to reply.”

Contractors will have to send their replies to the BMC’s notice at the earliest, as failing to do so could result in termination of their contracts.

This comes close on the heels of renewed protests by residents of Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg against the stench emanating from the Kanjurmarg dumping ground. Following the agitation, Mumbai mayor Sunil Prabhu ordered the civic administration to discontinue dumping of garbage at the ground.

The BMC had, on Monday, issued a notice to the contractor in-charge of the dumping ground for failing to control the stench, among other things.
