Sources said SIT told the court that Sharma was involved in a serious offence and if released on bail, he would threaten the witnesses and tamper with the evidence. Sharma had, on January 18, moved the sessions court seeking bail.

The Bombay High court had, last year, directed the police to form a SIT and lodge an first information report against police officers in connection with the alleged fake encounter of Gupta in 2006. SIT has conducted lie detector tests on Gupta’s brother Ram Prasad, witness Anil Bheda and Ram Prasad’s friend Ganesh Iyer. Sources added that the test identification parade of other accused — Constables Ratnakar Kamble and Tanaji Desai and three other informers —have also been conducted.

The court will now hear the arguments on Sharma’s bail plea on February 15.The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged fake encounter of suspected Chhota Rajan aide Ram Narayan Gupta, opposed the bail of dismissed encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma — a key accused — on Tuesday.
