In the charge sheet, filed on Monday, the CBI alleged Sonawane knew his killer Popat Shinde and that the murder was not meticulously planned but committed in a fit of rage. They also alleged that Sonawane had many cases of bribery pending against him in the state anti-corruption bureau (ACB).

Sonawane and Shinde were good friends but their relationship was strained since 2009, supposedly due to the former’s increasing demands, CBI said. Shinde had filed a case against Sonawane in ACB, Nashik, in August 2010 saying the latter sought a bribe to release an oil tanker belonging to Shinde.

The charge sheet said, on the day of the murder, Sonawane asked Shinde to meet him. Shinde refused due to a ritual at his house on the 10th day of his mother’s death. But Sonawane insisted, which angered Shinde who went to the spot with his son and others and killed Sonawane.
