The state cabinet may decide on the policy to increase the lease rent and facilitate the transfer of various government lands in greater Mumbai region on Tuesday.

There are around 1,200 plots or properties that the government had leased to residential societies, private firms or trusts. Owing to the meagre lease rent, the government is losing its revenue. As many leases have expired, the government will increase the lease rent, said a senior official on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report 2012 had highlighted the expired leases in the state. The CAG had said that the state has not done enough to reclaim its land or renew the lease at competitive rates.

According to the proposed revision in the land lease and transfer policy, the educational and medical institutes will not get the government land at cheaper rates.

The government is also likely to increase the rent for those exploiting the property commercially.
