Stop dumping in mangroves areas: HC

The Bombay High Court, on Thursday, directed the Mira-Bhyander Municipal Corporation to stop dumping garbage in mangrove areas.

The Bombay High Court, on Thursday, directed the Mira-Bhyander Municipal Corporation to stop dumping garbage in mangrove areas.

The directives came after city-based NGO, Bombay Environmental Action Group complained about large-scale destruction of mangrove forests at Dahisar and Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation’s limits despite repeated restraining court orders. Senior lawyer Navroj Seervai, who argued on behalf of the NGO, said: “Like cancer, the encroachers start destroying mangroves from centre of a big area.”

He added that a MMRDA contractor was using mangrove areas for the fabrication work. “Huge iron sheets cover the mangroves,” he said adding that the authorities had not acted on the local’s complaints. locals.

The court has given a week’s time to the state authorities, BMC and Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation to act on the directives.
