Tennis player dies in accident

A budding 13-year-old national-ranked tennis player from Nashik, Varun Pathare, and his mother were killed in a road accident on the Mumbai-Nashik highway on Monday.

A budding 13-year-old national-ranked tennis player from Nashik, Varun Pathare, and his mother were killed in a road accident on the Mumbai-Nashik highway on Monday.

Pathare, ranked 103rd by the All Indian Tennis Association in the boys under-14 age group, was returning home from Mumbai along with his parents and younger sister when their car collided with a tanker near the Kasara Ghat.

While Varun, who would have turned 14 on January 18, 2011, and his mother succumbed in the accident, his father, Samir Pathare who was driving the car, and his younger sister were injured and admitted to a hospital. The boy was selected for the intensive camp at the Srichapan Academy in Bangkok last year by the state tennis association.
