Tremors in Mumbai as mild quake hits western Maharashtra

The city experienced a few tremors on Saturday morning after two mild intensity earthquakes hit western Maharashtra and the Konkan. There was no damage to life and property recorded even till late evening.

The city experienced a few tremors on Saturday morning after two mild intensity earthquakes hit western Maharashtra and the Konkan. There was no damage to life and property recorded even till late evening.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an earthquake of the magnitude 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred at 10.57am. The epicentre was Goshatwadi village in Patan taluka of Satara district, about 10km from the Koyna dam. An aftershock measuring 4 on the Richter scale was recorded a little less than an hour later at 11.47pm, with its epicentre near Ratnagiri.

According to the Satara district administration there were no complaints of any damage to life and property. Officials from Koyna dam said while the dam was safe, some minor cracks were seen at some houses near Patan.

An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale with its epicentre at Kutch in Gujarat was recorded at 8.55 am.

Following the earthquakes, tremors were felt in various parts of Mumbai, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Pune, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
