The beat marshals were on a motorbike when they were hit by the car. The car’s driver, Rashid Ahmed Khan, fled after the accident, and was arrested later by the Azad Maidan police. One of the injured was admitted to Bombay hospital and is stated to be in critical condition.

At around 12pm, Khan, 43, a resident of PB Marg in Lower Parel, was driving the car on the JJ flyover when he hit the bike-borne constables while trying to overtake them. Minutes after the incident, the police control room informed the Azad Maidan police station that the car (MH01-AE-981) was headed towards south Mumbai.

The two injured constables were identified as Nagesh Shambhu and Vijay Chavan (both in early 40s), both attached with the DB Marg police station. The police said that Shambhu has been badly injured, and was fractured near his ear. Chavan escaped with minor injuries and was discharged after first aid. Anant Jadhav, assistant commissioner of police (Girgaon division) said, “The doctors have stated that Shambhu will be kept under observation for 48 hours.”

Meanwhile, the Azad Maidan police managed to trace Khan at Marine Chambers near Gol Masjid in south Mumbai. Deepak Dhole, senior inspector of Azad Maidan police station said, “We traced the car and took Khan into custody from the office of a marketing company. The car is registered in this company’s name, and Khan is its driver,” Nisar Tamboli, deputy commissioner of police (zone II) confirmed that a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered with the Pydhonie police, and that they took Khan’s custody late Monday. He would be produced in a local court on Tuesday, he added.
