“John said he wanted to disfigure her face. He said that Hosbetkar had deceived him by asking him to divorce his wife and then avoiding him. He felt that he had lost his family because of her,” said Rajesh Dhanvat, assistant commissioner of police, Dadar division.

The Dadar police said after John confessed, they were gathering evidence to make a strong case against him.

“A team will take him to the shop at Masjid Bunder from where he purchased the chemical,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy commissioner of police, zone 5, adding the police would record the statement of the shop owner.

Investigating officer, inspector Bharat Bhoite said they would send a team to Nallasopara to retrieve John’s vehicle.

The police have also sent his laptop and cellphone to the forensic science laboratory to retrieve message and e-mails that he had deleted.

Dhanvat said soon after the incident, John had deleted several e-mails including one Hosbetkar sent him telling that she did not want to maintain any contact with him. “We will need these to prove the motive behind the attack,” he said.

The police will record the statements of the victim’s friends who had witnessed the incident.

The police have secured John’s his custody till Friday.
