The World Bank mission, in its wrap-up meeting on Wednesday, called for better co-ordination between the MMRDA and various stakeholders to ensure timely completion of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. Work on the proposed Rs 242-cr link road started 2003 under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) and it was expected to be operational by 2005. The 6.5-km road will connect the eastern and western suburbs and cut travel time from two hours to 17 minutes.

"A few challenges remain. Issues relating to land acquisition and rehabilitation are posing hurdles," said Atul Agarwal, task team leader, MUTP. The MMRDA and the Railways have been at loggerheads over permission for building the bridge. The MMRDA, however, claimed to finish work by March 2011.
