In the past year, Arnav Chaudhary has landed two internships. Chaudhary, 22, who is set to earn Rs7,000 a month working from home for a Banglore-based portal during this summer break, is a far cry from the student of two years ago. Resume in hand, Chaudhary had approached a few companies for internships as a first-year engineering student, but nothing worked out.

Two years down the line, however, the landscape has changed. This year, Chaudhary just logged on, created a profile and found part-time work through the site “This way it was easier for both me and the companies,” said Chaudhary, who is now in the third year.

It is the need for interns and the lack of avenues that has prompted a few start-ups to connect students and companies online. While and were set up in 2010, was set up in January last year and followed shortly after in February.

Anywhere between 400 and 2,500 organisations are registered on these sites, including start-ups, non-profits, media houses as well as big corporates. Between them, more than 30,000 internships have been offered through these sites.

“There are a lot of students keen to work and it used to be hard to find it in an organised manner,” said Rishabh Gupta, 26, CEO and co-founder of Even as an Indian Institute of Technology-Madras student, Sarvesh Agrawal, who founded Internshala, recalled having difficulties. “When I was in college, I had trouble finding out about internships,” said Agrawal. “It worked if you had contacts. We were thinking about something in technology and education space and saw the need for this.”
