25 years of AR Rahman: I don’t have money to make a film like Baahubali, says the composer

AR Rahman says that there are so many great directors out there making commercial cinema, so he would focus on a format that is not explored much.

Music composer and singer, AR Rahman completes 25 years in the film industry today. It was in 1992 with filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s Roja, that Rahman started his journey in the world of music and rest, as they say, is history. The film also marks 25 years of Rahman’s association with the ace filmmaker. Having impressed fans with his melodious voice for last 25 years, Rahman is now set to don the director’s hat—in the world of virtual reality. He is making his directorial debut with a virtual reality film that releases in India and abroad by end of this year.

Rahman, who is still working on the film, says, “I have been trying to tell stories through music for a long time, and finally I’ve found the way [virtual reality] to go about it.”

The music maestro shares that he wants to explore the format more, and already has another film in mind. Ask him if he would ever want to direct a film in the regular format, may be something as grand as Baahubali, Rahman laughs, “I don’t think I have 200 crores to make such a film. On a serious note, I have no such plans as of now.”

Rahman goes on to add that he’s rather focus on virtual reality format at this moment. “There are so many talented people out there, already doing it so well. I would touch upon formats that are not much explored, and create something grand in that space. There are amazing directors who are making such wonderful films [like Baahubali], so I don’t think there’s much for me to do there..”
