The first ever Global India Music Awards, in association with Hindustan Times, hit all the right notes. While blockbuster 3 Idiots picked up the award for Best Film Album, Lata Mangeshkar was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

The evening kicked off with GIMA goodwill ambassador Asha Bhosle performing Rabrakha, a Sufi song, live for the audience. That was followed by renditions of Mangeshkar’s classic hits by musicians like Shankar Mahadevan, Salim Merchant, Leslie Lewis, Pritam Chakraborty, Loy Mendonsa, Ehsaan Noorani, Sulaiman Merchant, Shantanu Moitra, Raju Singh and Uttam Singh.

While we all do great work, the challenge is to continue doing it over and over again," Mangeshkar said as she received a standing ovation from all present. Along with Usha Mangeshkar, she also received an award for Best Devotional Album for Shree Hanuman Chalisa. "This is my first non-film music award. To receive an award for a prayer sung for God is absolutely wonderful," Mangeshkar added.

Pt Ravi Shankar was awarded Outstanding Contribution by an Indian on the Global stage. Shantanu Moitra who won the Best Playback singer along with Shaan for their song Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh in 3 Idiots says, "We worked on the music of 3 Idiots for 18 months, so it’s a delight to receive this award and see the film's music also win the best album and the best theatre mix award tonight."

While host Sajid Khan kept the audience in good spirits; Dia Mirza seemed a complete misfit as co-host. Kareena Kapoor, who performed on a medley of four song, said, "We have performed at film awards many times. But to perform for the musicians who give us actors their voices on screen is a humbling experience. It's time the music industry gets recognition. I wish them the best."

Her Golmaal 3 co-star Shreyas Talpade kept the audience entertained with his gags. But it was Sonu Niigaam mimicking his musician colleagues, that stole the audience’s hearts.
