PUNE: The Wai police have learnt that the Umbraj police had found the body of an unidentified woman in the Krishna river in August 2008, just days after Santosh Pol allegedly murdered one of his six victims, Vanita Gaikwad, and disposed of her body at Dhom Dam.
Wai and Umbraj are about 70km apart and the river passes through both towns.
A source close to the investigation said that while the police are yet to confirm whether or not the body was that of Gaikwad, the Umbraj police’s photographs and description of it from the time seem to indicate that this is the case.
After finding the body, the Umbraj police conducted certain legal formalities. As nobody came forward to claim the body, they cremated it 30 days later, according to the rules.
It is not yet known whether they recorded her death as accidental or unnatural. A source said the Wai police are now looking for the post-mortem and viscera reports of the unidentified woman. A team of policemen from Wai visited Umbraj police station on Wednesday to check their records.
According to the police, Pol confessed to murdering Gaikwad and disposing of her body at Dhom Dam in August 2008. He is also believed to have visited Umbraj police station to see the body that was found days later after reading reports in local newspapers.
