A 10-wheel truck was found parked along the road side near Chaumuha village in Mathura district on Wednesday morning. The truck had been abandoned. Later in the evening, some locals detected a foul smell coming from the truck. When they looked inside, they saw 50-60 cows, most of whom were dead.

Locals removed the carcasses from the truck and set fire to the vehicle. Police did not reach the spot for an hour.

In the meantime, the agitated locals blocked the Agra- Delhi highway. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded due to the jam. When a police team arrived, it had to face stone pelting as did the fire brigade personnel.

Mathura district magistrate Nikhil Chandra Shukla said the truck had come from outside the state. “The matter will be inquired into and the guilty will face action,” he said.
