According to RSS insiders, Chauhan and Bhagwat held a closed-door meeting for over half an hour. “The talk was a one-toone conversation,” said a senior swayamsevak, who requested anonymity.

Chauhan said FTII students were still in opposition to his appointment. Bhagwat told him to continue as chairman and to not give in to opposition pressure, said the senior swayamsevak.

Chauhan said he visited the RSS headquarters to discuss a matter relating to his personal, not professional life. “Bhagwatji is a father figure to me. I came to invite him for my son’s wedding,” he said.

Chauhan justified vacating a few students from their hostel rooms after they had completed their course. “A student can stay in the hostel for three years till their course is completed. After that, they get just a one year extension,” he said.

Chauhan, a BJP-leaning TV actor, was appointed as the FTII chairman last year. Amidst massive protests, he said he would not resign.

FTII students had gone on an indefinite strike. Several film makers had supported the agitation. The students said the TV star lacked the vision and stature to head the prestigious institute. However, they called off their strike in October.
