HYDERABAD: “Don’t grow your beard this much,” Amol Singh’s friend had commented on his Facebook page a few years ago. Singh may have taken it lightly but the same beard landed him in trouble on Saturday, when he was beaten by ABVP activists at University of Hyderabad, mistaking him for a Kashmiri. In an interview to Srinivasa Rao Apparasu, Singh said he never expected to become a victim of the high-handedness of ABVP students.

Are you feeling insecure after this incident?
I am. I fear they (ABVP activists) may attack me again. I lodged a complaint with the university proctoral committee and so did they. I am apprehensive the authorities might even suspend me based on their complaint, as they did against Rohith Vemula others.
Do you want to continue studies at UoH or move out?
I don’t know. It depends on how things turn out for me in the coming days. I don’t know how long the police cases and university probe will go on. If everything is okay, I may continue my research here.
How did you land here?
After completing my graduation in arts from Punjab University in Patiala, I came here in 2013 to pursue postgraduation in political science. Last year, I enrolled for M.Phil in the same department.
What is your family background?
I hail from a middle-class Sikh family in Patiala. My father is a farmer and my mother works as a clerk at a local post office.
What are your future plans?
I’ll have to complete M.Phil by December. I may get an extension for six months if I am not in a position to submit my dissertation by year-end. After that, I might take up PhD.
