Israel govt to upgrade security of Nagpur jail

NAGPUR: A group of officers from the Israel Prison Service (IPS) visited the Nagpur Central Prison on Monday to suggest measures to upgrade the jail security.
The prison made news in March last year when five of its criminals escaped.
Breaking the iron rods of their nine-feet-high cell, they jumped over the compound wall and fled. Cell phones and illegal items too were seized in a surprise raid during this period.
The IPS will provide free high-quality jammers, advanced CCTV cameras, cyber-fencing and mobile detectors to the jail. They will also train the prison staff.
In Israel, dogs are used to guard prisoners and detect drug-smuggling.
The IPS is exploring the possibility of training dogs to perform these activities here.
“By installing modern technology and training jail staff, the state jails will be made fool-proof security zones and illegal activities will be prevented,” a senior jail official said.
Israel’s security system caught chief minister Fadnavis’s attention last year. During his visit to Israel, he invited the senior officials of security companies there to discuss improving jail security in Maharashtra.
If the scheme is successful, similar facilities will be provided at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai and Yerwada Central Prison in Pune.
