Noida police nabbed a person from Nithari intersection on Sunday evening for his alleged role in 68 incidents of robbery in Delhi-NCR. The accused targeted high-profile executives, trapped them by offering business proposals and then robbed them, the police said.
The police said that the man, identified as 35-year-old Akshay Saini, used to get details of multinational companies in Delhi-NCR, its directors and CEOs, from the internet and used to offer them business proposals by posing as an hotelier who has businesses in Delhi and Goa. He used to set up meetings at premium restaurants and robbed them of their valuables by threatening to kill them, the police said.
“We arrested Saini from Nithari intersection on Sunday evening while conducting a routine check. His accomplice, Hemant Sharma, was also riding with him on a motorcycle, but he escaped,” Anil Kumar Shai, the station house officer of Sector 20 police station, said.
“Saini could not produce the registration papers of the motorcycle he was riding. We took him into custody and questioned him, after which he admitted to having committed as many as 68 offences in Delhi-NCR,” Shai said.
Saini is a native of Hissar in Haryana and has been taking part in criminal activities since 2015.
The police said that Saini only studied till Class 8 but spoke fluent English. “English was his favourite subject. Over the years, he honed his spoken English and trapped affluent people by speaking in English and offering business proposals,” the police said.
Most of these cases went unreported as the victims did not want to disclose how they were fooled, the police said.
Besides high-profile targets, Saini and Sharma also robbed many people of their jewellery, laptops and cash. Saini had come to visit Sharma in Noida when he was caught, the police said.
Five cases of robbery are registered against Sharma in Noida’s Sector 20 police station. The police are on the lookout for Sharma, who is a resident of Khora in Ghaziabad.
Saini told police that he now did not even remember the details of his robberies. He robbed people in Noida, Delhi, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Haridwar. Saini was produced in court and sent to jail.
