The police said that a man was indiscriminately attacking passersby with an iron rod in Choura area late Sunday night, near Sector 22 of Noida. The police termed it a ‘mad spree’ and said that the man could have been under the influence of drugs.
One of the persons who was attacked by the man received grievous injuries to his head. The injured man, Rakesh, was rushed to a private hospital and he is said to be in a critical condition.
The incident took place around 11.30pm on Sunday. The 32-year-old man, identified as Sanjay, first launched an attack on a girl. He hit her on the shoulder and pushed her into a ditch. Onlookers said that he did not stop there and jumped into the ditch to continue hitting the girl.
Seeing the incident, two other men rushed to her rescue, which diverted Sanjay’s attention towards them.
Sanjay then left the woman and went after the two men. He injured Rakesh Garg and Amit with the rod. While Amit and the girl, Rukamni Rai, received minor injuries in the attack, Rakesh was hit hard on his head, bled profusely and fell unconscious. Amit and the girl ran to save themselves, the police said.
Following the attack on the three persons, Sanjay started running directionlessly and hit whoever was in his reach. Onlookers told the police that he smacked every person who crossed him and many narrowly avoided being hit. He did not spare vehicles either, the police said.
After 15-20 minutes, the man also fell unconscious. Onlookers said that the man had also hurt himself during the frenzy. The police reached the spot and rushed the injured persons, including Sanjay, to the hospital.
Umed Singh Yadav, station house officer of Sector 24 police station, said, “The man looked like he was under the influence of drugs. He is presently admitted to the district hospital as he was also injured and is still unconscious.”
“Based on the complaint from the girl and Amit, we have registered a case against Sanjay. We are investigating the matter,” Singh said.
Police said Sanjay is from Odisha and worked as a plumber in Noida.
