The Ghaziabad police on Tuesday registered an FIR against three people in connection with the acid attack on a 32-year-old woman.
The woman suffered severe injuries after acid was thrown on her by two unidentified men on a motorcycle in Sector 23, Sanjay Nagar, in Ghaziabad, on Monday evening.
Based on the complaint by the victim’s family, the FIR was filed at the Kavi Nagar police station against one Rahul Garg, a resident of Raj Nagar, and two unidentified persons. The police said they suspected some ‘corrosive substance’ had been poured on the victim.
“We will get a forensic analysis done to ascertain the nature of the substance used to injure the victim. We are trying to track Rahul who deals in chemicals. If Rahul is involved in the case, it would have been easy for him to get some chemical or substance for the attack. Rahul is on the run; his last known location is Punjab. Our teams will track him soon,” Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police, said.
The SSP said Rahul knew the victim for the past one-and-a-half years.
According to the SSP, the woman has suffered nearly 60% burn injuries on her body and is being treated at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. She was attacked around 4.30pm on Monday when she was returning home on a scooter after dropping her child at tuition class.
“In his police complaint, the victim’s husband said that Rahul had been harassing his wife for a while and had also come to their house on July 30 ,along with two other men and a woman. The victim’s husband suspected Rahul’s involvement in the incident as he had also issued threats during the visit. The complainant has said that Rahul was pressuring the victim to leave her husband and marry him instead. The role of the woman who accompanied him will also be probed,” the SSP said.
The case has been registered under the IPC sections 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid, etc.) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) .
The police are investigating other angles as well as scanning through CCTV footage for further clues.
Meanwhile, according to PTI, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed the Uttar Pradesh DGP to apprise it of the investigation into the acid attack.
The NCW has also expressed concern about the growing incidents of acid attacks despite the Supreme Court’s ban on the unregulated sale of the corrosive substance in 2013.
