According to the police, the accused, 22-year-old Ankit Kumar, and his accomplice, Sachin Kumar, who died in the incident, had cornered Mohammed Javed, a resident of Loni, at gunpoint. Javed was heading to the railway station to board a train around 5.30pm, the police said.

“Ankit held Javed at gunpoint and snatched Rs 1,500 from him. When he tried to snatch his mobile, Javed resisted upon which Ankit fired a shot. The shot, however, did not hit Javed but hit Sachin who fell on the spot, over the tracks, which is hardly 500 metres from the railway station,” AP Singh, station house officer, Loni, said.

Officials said that the deceased, Sachin, had no previous criminal record but accompanied Ankit to earn a quick buck by robbing others.

“After Sachin was hit, Ankit escaped with the cash and mobile phone as Javed raised an alarm. Thereafter, Ankit was traced and arrested on Friday. He also has two criminal cases against his name at Kandhla,” Singh said.

After Ankit was arrested, the police recovered Javed’s mobile phone and Rs 1,000 from his possession. Ankit was booked for murder of his accomplice. The police also recovered the murder weapon, along with two live cartridges.
